Shadow Time
The objective of the Landscape Design Studio 3 was to revitalize a detached historic urban space, Mashq Square, located in Tehran based on current needs of the society. The challenge was to attach this place to the city by converting it to a public space while maintaining the identity of the place.
Initially, the Square was made for military drill out of the city and public were prohibited to commute. By the expansion of the Tehran, the Square’s location came inside the city, and it was dedicated to the public exhibitions of administration and modernizing the city. Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ main buildings is located there that has made this valuable place remain unpopular among citizens. However, it was one of the most important and memorable spots of Tehran in its lifetime.
Goals
Preserving the identity of a place consists of two steps. First, people need to get information about the history of Square to shape its character in their minds. Then, they need to create their own memories in order to persuade themselves to return to the place reminisce their memories.
Ideas
As a momentous place in the city center, the Square needs to get more attraction from people. Using shadows to display past events of this place can be an interesting way to let people know about the history of Square primarily and then let them collaborate and create their shadows next to the history-related ones.
