Sport Complex

Structure

The site was located in the middle of a neighborhood next to two main roads and crossed by a sidewalk which linked these two roads. We were asked to design a sport complex in this site. As contemporary urban structure caused people to be more detached from their surroundings I decided to design a sport complex which could act as a neighborhood center. Therefore, I focused on the sidewalk and locate the complex in a way that let the path to gain more power and character in the neighborhood.

The architectural form of this project is the materialization and integration of tension and compression force flow. A cable-stayed structure using elements under tension and compression stresses reduces structural weight, saves material and simplifies structural calculations, by eliminating bending and shear stresses. Arch and column as structural elements under compression load and cable and membrane under tension load are pre-stressed in a truss configuration. This triangular configuration is an architectural solution to achieve lateral stability with use of joints without bending and shear creation.
